2023 Castello di Verduno Basadone
100% Pelaverga from a producer considered the benchmark for this variety in Piedmont.
Cracked white pepper & graphite spice on the nose. Delicate red fruits of strawberry & a little raspberry punctuated by fine silky tannins. This is what Pelaverga is all about. It’s an all year round kind of red & super lunch wine with its light body. Pinot & Red Burgundy lovers should be all over this.
93 Points, Gary Walsh (TWF) – “Strawberry, raspberry, watermelon rind, spice and pepper, aniseed and flowers. It’s juicy and savoury at once, crisp and energetic, a sappy character in with bright red fruits, orange peel and spice. There’s a fine dusty grip to tannin, and a tangy finish of good length. It’s a little more watercoloured in 2023, yet still so charming and lovely to drink.”
92 Points, Stephen Blandford (Huon Hooke) The Real Review - "Crystalline pale ruby colour. The bouquet is subtle and more complex, strawberry fruit, some pomegranate with delicate floral lift and just a hint of sweet spice, quite alluring. In the mouth there is a lovely balance of tangy fruit and powdery texture with discreet spicy notes and a brief pinch of tannin on the lingering, almond tinged finish. This is a more layered version of pelaverga and a delicious wine to boot."
