2021 Rockford Frugal Farmer Grenache Mataro
Winery Notes - "Barossa folklore claims the pioneers were so frugal that when they killed a pig on the farm for meat and smallgoods, they used everything but the squeal.
When we make our Alicante Bouchet Rosè, the grapes are pressed immediately so the skins are not used. As the keepers of Barossa tradition, we couldn't allow this to go on. Immediately after the juice is drained, we crush Grenache and Mataro onto Alicante skins and ferment them together before finally basket pressing. The addition of the Alicante skins makes a critical contribution to this wine, enhancing flavour, tannin, and spice.
The Frugal Farmer is medium bodied yet full flavoured and lower in alcohol than our other red wines. This wine is also the exception to the rule when it comes to our commitment to two-year oak aging and is best enjoyed in its youth.
The mild conditions of the 2021 vintage delivered us high quality fruit, giving this wine a striking bright garnet colour and a rich, savoury, and spicy palate."
