2016 Platinetti Guido Vigna Ronco al Maso, Ghemme DOCG
94+ Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front – “A lot of spice and biscuit, dried rose, ripe cherry and red fruits, almost a liquorice perfume or those Ricola alpine sweets. Medium-bodied, plush and fine dusty tannin, a quiet succulence of cherries and ripe raspberry, freshness and cool length with a slightly sappy tang. Beautiful wine, though it’s a little shy at present.” Drink 2021-2035
I had the pleasure of drinking this with winemaker Andrea in a flight with his 97 & 08 in January this year. This wine is reminiscent of the wonderful 2008. There's more no than a touch of some famous Serralunga like Autumnal notes to this wine and builds depth and complexity the longer it's open. At this stage of its life it's doing it's best work day 2.
The older bottlings like the 2016 were teeming with minerality and I would go as far as to say this 2016 is a substantially more impressive release than the 2015 which took out Tre Bicchiero from Gambero Rosso. Bravo again Andrea!
Winemaker Andrea Fontana has an uncompromising commitment to minimal intervention winemaking from his superb holdings of old vines. Platinetti are true emerging superstars of Piemonte winemaking. The Ronco Maso (cru) vineyard produces Ghemme of intense minerality and wonderful perfume.
From the old Ronco al Maso cru in Ghemme. This is from a terraced vineyard with fluvial -glacial soil with sandy and pebbly texture.
The minimum vine age here is 45 years. The wine is raised in 30 hectolitre Slavonian botti for 36 months.
From the superb 2016 vintage - drink now to 20+ years.
