2010 Wantirna Estate Amelia Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot

Wantirna Estate Amelia Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2010
Posted on 08 October 2012.
Grown (mostly) on the estate’s 1963-planted vines. Cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc and a small percentage of petit verdot. Never a blockbuster but when it’s good, it’s terrific.
All the best wines are characterised by their length, and this wine is sensationally persistent. Long, ropey, spice-shot trails of tannin. Dry tobacco, mulberry/blackcurrant, not especially deep but not alcohol-based either; its variations of flavour are allowed to flow and express unencumbered. Eucalypt, and cedary oak, play a hand-in-glove role. Juicy and yet focussed by its spicy, smoky tannin. Some autumnal/leafy notes. Sensationally composed and confident.
