The previous few S.C.Pannell wines reviewed were tasted via a retailer (Kemenys), and this comes to me through another retailer (United Cellars). Fair to say the independents are all over Pannell like a fat kid on a chocolate cake.
Its light colour sends the right signal straight away. This is, dare I say it, ‘classic’ Nebbiolo of very fine quality. Cherry and red fruits, sage and licorice root perfume, some dusty old wood spice and floral top notes. Medium bodied with clear and pure fruit flavour driven along by fresh ‘barely ripe’ strawberry acidity and fine grained tannin grip – feels almost feathery in the mouth – and finishes long and precise. Built up and unfurled with time in decanter and glass. So very impressive. Good fruit. Masterful wine making.
