2007 Te Mata Coleraine
Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front
Posted on 14 June 2009.
Coleraine is a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc and while other Te Mata Estate wines gain accolades the estate firmly considers this to be its best wine. It now has a pedigree of 25 vintages.
Takes some time to open up but then a lot of elements fall into place. Long, long lines of mature tannin. Classic chocolatey, cigar-like flavours. Blackcurrant and dark olive. And a line of acidity that keeps the wine fresh, almost light, while never separating from the wine’s flavours. Lovely fresh, ripe berry fragrances pour forward over the course of a bottle. And despite its tannin framework, it maintains a clear, sturdy drinkability. You can go for this now, though it is built to be cellared.
