Mark has made this since 2014. He says Pommard is his ‘Côte de Beaune version of Nuits-St-Georges’. South-facing on thin/mean soils. Old vines. Fully destemmed.

96 Points & 5 Star Rating, Huon Hooke – “Medium to deep red/purple colour. Reserved aromas of smoky charcuterie, smallgoods, deep-seated cherries. The palate is medium to full-bodied and firm, intense and refined, with supple and well-balanced tannins, the finish quite tightly composed and firm. It lingers well, with abundant sappy tannins and extra good length. A wine that's worth cellaring..” Drink 2019-2034

Sarah Marsh 18.15 – “This has a delightfully spicy nose. It is both succulent & fruity, but light and delicate. An elegance to the texture. Lovely long finish.”

Neal Martin 90-92 – “The 2017 Pommard Clos des Arvelets 1er Cru has a slightly tertiary bouquet. There would seem to be some whole bunches here, but in fact there is none. The palate is medium-bodied, offering quite a savoury, ferrous entry, a fine bead of acidity and a tang of cracked black pepper toward the finish. This has good potential.”

Bill Nanson – “More modest colour. Another slightly lifted freshness that resembles whole clusters – lovely – but there are none again! Ooh – bigger and much more impact than the colour suggests – lots of growing energy, and depth of flavour – super flavour. Lots of finishing flavour with a slight touch of finishing oak today…”

Jancis Robinson 16.5, “Lightish cherry red. Tangy sour-cherry nose, surprisingly fragrant. Firm and a little smoky on the palate. Taut but not hard and there’s tension on the finish between the acidity and the tannins. Needs time. (JH)
