95 Points, Gary Walsh – “Red cherry, almond, roses, spice. It’s fresh, quite pretty, all the red fruits and perfume, but with some grunt to go, fine chalky tannin offering grip, a juicy finish with some ‘mineral’ acidity, and a fine long, almost succulent finish. Excellent potential here too, though you can get into it now.” Drink 2021-2032+
A very different and atypical Simposio we find with the 2016. Speaking more of its Verduno component of the cepage.
Ultra fragrant with notes of graphite, five spice and sage. It's far more red fruited than the last three releases of this wine and the all the better for it in the eyes of this Burgundy drinker. Cherry, a hint of cranberry and freshness to its acidity which carry its silky fine tannins.
Also an average vine age in excess of 50 years like its stablemate the Monvigliero. Easily our favourite Simposio release thus far and a great example of the complexity that can be achieved with the age old tradition of multi commune blending.
