94 Points, Gary Walsh (TWF) – “Quite the aromatic thing here. Dried flowers, aniseed, menthol, herbs and orange peel, in with red cherry and a sort of Black Forest ham meatiness. Medium-bodied, strawberry and cherry, a stony ‘mineral’ thing, blood orange acidity, fine peppery tannin, dry almost bony, then comes a succulent red fruited finish strewn with perfume and bitter herbal aromatics. Distinctive as ever.” Drink 2024-2035

95 Points, GalloniThe 2017 Ghemme Vigna Ronco al Maso is terrific. Bright and translucent in the glass, the 2017 conveys power as well as finesse. The level of nuance here is just unreal, especially in a year that is so uneven throughout the region. Lavender, sage, mint, tobacco and black cherry build as this striking, layered Ghemme opens in the glass. The Vigna Ronco shows what Platinetti is capable of. Ideally, the other wines in this range should be equally compelling. In a word: magnificent.

100% Nebbiolo from the old Ronco al Maso cru in Ghemme. This is from a terraced vineyard with fluvial-glacial soil with sandy and pebbly texture.

The minimum vine age here is 45 years. The wine is raised in 30 hectolitre Slavonian botti for 36 months.

Winemaker Andrea Fontana has an uncompromising commitment to minimal intervention winemaking from his superb holdings of old vines.  Platinetti are true emerging superstars of Piemonte winemaking.  The Ronco Maso (cru) vineyard produces Ghemme of intense minerality and wonderful perfume.
