94 Points, Gary Walsh - "Liquorice, thyme and oregano, ripe cherries. Fresh wine, but heaps of sandy chewy tannin, marzipan, sweet fruit with amaro bitterness. Bold, but lively, more tannin and nut praline in the finish of good length. Irrepressible. Rustic but clean. A bonus point for being so emphatic and different."
Never bound by convention at Matunei - this a blend of nebbiolo & barbera with a 50/50 cepage. Raised for 24 months in stainless steel before moving to old oak for 4 months.
Lively Barbera acidity carrying those Nebbiolo tannins and sarsaparilla to a long and precise finish. Graphite minerality aromas punctuated with sage and wild thyme. Finishing with a lick of liquorice and a just mere hint of gamey wildness in fact it's uncharacteristically 'tame' for lo-fi team Matunei. Delicious - get in there!
