2021 Matunei Grignolino d’Asti “Gusán"
Reds fruits - strawberry & cranberry but punctuated with charcuterie and smoked meats. Yet it’s still vibrant & brightly lit. Some tobacco & wild thyme. It’s charismatic & idiosyncratic but beautiful like all Matunei wines. Give it a little air & it will sing.
94 Points, Lisa Cardelli (The Wine Pilot) – “A funky Grignolino that I am sure will satisfy even the naysayers. Curry leaves, ginger, cumin, graphite, white pepper, tart cranberries. If the nose is a funky town, the palate is an entirely different story, with its delicate red berries and a touch of cinnamon presenting as utterly clean and bracing red wine. Lovely length and energy.”
93 Points, Gary Walsh - "Smells like a nicely grilled pork and fennel sausage, also strawberry and redcurrant, with some rosehip perfume. It’s medium-bodied, red fruits along with some char and savoury herbs, juicy orange and cranberry acidity, a soft puff of powdery tannin, with a meaty and juicy, gently amaro/orange peel finish of good length. It’s a quirky wine, and quite different, but gee it offers quite some character and drinks very well. Also, there’s something of a volcanic/pumice stone thing here. If you want to spread your wine wings and experience something a bit different, then I reckon you’d like this. I do."
